WOW! Time flies when you are having fun! The Joseph Meyinsse Teacher Leadership Institute (JMTLI) is currently in its first year of developing teachers’ leadership skills and preparing them to share what they have learned with other teachers. It seems like just yesterday we were preparing for a pilot project to train teachers to use inquiry in their classes and help students learn. Thankfully, we have transformed a pilot project into a comprehensive and highly successful institute for preparing teachers to use creative teaching strategies for enhancing student learning.

We are grateful for the support of the LIGO Science Education Center Partners (LIGO SEC, San Francisco Exploratorium, LaSIP/LA GEAR UP), who were quite instrumental and continue to provide us with additional resources to make a greater impact on science and math education. We are excited about working with our current teachers, pleased with our progress to date, and anticipate expanding JMTLI to include others who are interested in teacher leadership.

I welcome our JMTLI participants. We know that it will be challenging for you to implement some of the leadership training in your schools. Our goal is to empower our participants to be effective leaders for educational excellence in their schools. Our challenge is to provide all teachers with professional development experiences that are needs-driven, curriculum-focused, job-embedded, and relevant.

The Joseph Meyinsse Teacher Leadership Institute (JMTLI) is cultivating teachers to become leaders in their schools. These teachers have accepted the awesome responsibility of mentoring and coaching teachers in their schools and/or districts. We began as Project Modeling Inquiry Science Education (MISE) in 2005. Our priority was to provide content-rich professional development for middle school math and science teachers.  It is still our goal to immerse teachers in professional development activities that improves the learning of all students and guides continuous instructional improvement through the JMTLI.

Attending relevant institutes such as the Exploratorium’s Institute for Inquiry and Teacher's Institute allowed me to investigate and implement diverse methods of informal learning in our summer professional development activities. I strive to communicate to teachers the importance of building relationships. It is through working with others that we develop shared understandings and gain the benefit of the ideas of others. Collectively we improve teaching and learning.  My number one goal is to inspire teachers to help orthers to become passionate, life-long learners through inquiry.
